3 Upcoming Events

Welwitschia Mirabilis - watercolour

Calling all watercolourists - take note!
These are our last 3 events of the year:

Painting Saturday: Saturday May 7, 11:30-4pm at NUP
I'm going to try painting a still life - anyone else is welcome to join in!

Annual AGM: Monday, May 9, 7:30-8:30 at NUP
All current or wanna-be board members should attend this meeting, and all regular members are encouraged to come as well! I'm making AGMmmmmm brownies!!!!!!!!

I'll send out an agenda shortly before the meeting, as there may be positions to be filled. Current executive members might have to stay a couple of extra minutes to review upcoming business.

Final Show!! Saturday May 28 8:00am-4:00pm.
Always a fantastic event... Set-up is the evening before. Please think about the work you would like to submit, whether it is from a workshop, a demo, or something you have been working on on your own. Also, we'll be looking for volunteers to donate some hours to supervise the show and perhaps make some art at the same time. Details at the AGM.

It's been a great year of painting with you all! Thanks for sharing your creative thoughts and company with the group. Looking forward to another inspiring year ahead!

If you have any questions about the above events, please give me a shout: 873-6906

Regular Meeting Monday

7:30 pm in Room 205 Northern United Place

Another month has almost gone by!
  • If you've been working on something new, do bring it in for show and tell
  • Shawna will be continuing her Pears demo, and Lynn will be working on Landscapes for whoever wants to join in!
  • In a few months, we'll be having our public show, so maybe think about something to work towards as a feature piece for the event!
  • There are lots of online resources for anyone interested in learning new techiques, and our public library also has a good reference section.
Check out these sunflower workshop photos with San Fransisco artist Kathleen Alexander (thanks Shawna for sending this along).

Shawna also sent along this link for a new masking technique  for those of us who like masking things, it's pretty nifty!

See you Monday

Painting Saturday

Join us for Painting Saturday, February 5, 11-4pm Room 215 @ NUP Bring whatever you are working on! Sketch, paint, draw or start something new!

A reminder that our next evening class date will be on  Feb 21.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Jim Davies workshop in January - it was a big success! I think we all found the drawing exercises really helpful and it was great to see everyone's work up on the wall for the critiques. We are already putting in a proposal for funding another instructor later this year.

Here are some snapshots from the weekend:

January Meeting

NEXT MEETING: Monday, Jan 17, 7:30pm Room 205 @ NUP

It's a busy month for us! See below for a new watercolour demo that Shawna is starting on Monday (print the images below if you like), and Lynn will be continuing his landscape demo

WORKSHOP: JIM DAVIES
Also, this coming weekend (Jan 22-23) is our workshop with Jim Davies. Click here for a list of what to bring to the class. There is still room for more people to join, so spread the word!

Shawna's Demo: Still Life with Pears

In November Shawna began the demo for a still life set up.  One person brought pears, another brought scrabble letters and then we had two different pieces of fabric for the background.  We then went out for a lesson on how to use the photo printing machine where we printed off the images.

If you missed that meeting, do not despair! We have images for people to use and we begin painting at the January meeting.
Supplies:

  • 8x10 inch piece of watercolour paper
  •
  • Watercolour paints -
  • Yellow Green (like Sap Green)
  • Yellows (like New Gamboge & Yellow Ocher)
  • Range of blues & purples
  • Reds - cool and warm
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Black
  • Brushes - wide range of sizes
  • Masking fluid - a brush that you can use for its application (white synthetic round works well)
  • Hair blower and an Extension cord (important)
  • water container, paper towel, q-tips (just a few), of course your painting palette
Now if you are new to watercolour, please come and Shawna will have extra supplies for you to work with.  Bring what you can and come to explore!

Painting Saturday for January

Here is where I am suppose to put images from the last painting saturday...I would do that if my old computer hadn't eaten the photos and gave me the blue screen of death.  Sigh.

So Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in Room 205 Lynn and Rae will be hosting Painting Saturday.  Go and join them.  It is a great way to get some work done and spend time with fun people!

Jean Pederson

Last spring Jean came and taught here. We had a great time. She has her first dvd out that looks very cool.

Check it out at http://www.ccpvideos.com/page/CCP/PROD/JP1d

Shawna's Still Life Demonstration

Bring drawing supplies, still life items, and digital camera.

Ideas for still life set ups.

Keep it to one or two different items (but in multiples of 2 or 3) with simple shapes to start with:

cups (with tea or coffee),saucers, glasses, fruit, berries, veggies, silverware, flowers, battenburg lace, bowls, children toys, books, playing cards, foods - dessert or cookies or candies or eggs, stones, jewelry, pitcher, figurines, children games, baby shoes, coins, ect

There are a few options to think about for Monday.

Fabric options for under the set up. Use a solid fabric or a piece that is graphically simple. So stripes, simple larger shapes. Remember the size of your still life objects when choosing fabric. If the item is a pear then choose a fabric that has a medium sized pattern that would not be overwhelmed by the pear or so large that the pear gets lost on it.

What is the theme of the still life set up? How does the fabric and still life objects work together to represent your chosen theme?

If you have any questions, call me.
